No matter how exciting, happy or frightening our dreams are, we like to dwell in our dreams as a means to escape reality. And what we love even more is films that delve into different kinds of concepts about dreams.
We've selected five of our favourite films that involve dreaming and living in a dream state.
Film: 8 1/2 (1963)
Writer & Director: Federico Fellini
Fellini's 8 1/2 is a cult classic. The film is semi-autobiographical and tells the story of a filmmaker, struggling with his conscience, finding creativity and the demands of the film industry. Along the way, he recalls events from his life that ultimately help him in his creative process.
Film: Inception (2010)
Writer & Director: Christopher Nolan
Perhaps one of the most recent cult favourite. From Christopher Nolan, comes a film that dives into the abstract concept of lucid dreaming. The film pulls you into different stages of dreaming and makes you look at your dreams in a new way.
Film: Solaris (1972)
Writer & Director: Andrei Tarkovsky
Another cult classic. A psychologist is sent to an exoplanet Solaris to find out what happened there. Solaris is a science fiction film that explores the concepts of psychological trauma and losing our sense of reality.
Film: Dreams (1990)
Writer & Director: Akira Kurosawa & Ishiro Honda
Every scene in this film is like a painted dream, every minute aesthetically satisfying. Divided into chapters, the film explores the stages of maturing, our connection with nature and the complexities of life.
Film: The Matrix (1999)
Writer & Director: Lana & Lilly Wachowski
We would have loved continuing but for a curated list of five, we're ending with The Matrix. With The Matrix trilogy, the Wachowskis gave the world the choice between red and blue; of dreams and reality, with a hint of punk and conscience and kick-ass martial arts. Naturally, we couldn't leave this one out.
